What is the WOD?

The Workout of the Day, or ‘WOD’, is a CrossFit based workout; the structure and content of which changes on a daily basis. Offering a strong focus on all-around strength and conditioning, WOD consists of functional training addressing an individual strength or skill element, followed by a completely unique workout – e.g. five rounds of 10 back squats, 500m row, etc. to be completed as quickly as possible within a set time period. Similar to HIIT workouts, WODs are typically designed to push all muscle groups to the limit, but for longer periods of time with fewer rest breaks.

What is CrossFit?

CrossFit is one of the most effective methods to improve your overall fitness, lose weight and lead a healthier lifestyle. Drawing the most effective and scalable elements and techniques from weightlifting, gymnastics, and high-intensity interval training (HIIT), this popular fitness discipline works to get you physically and mentally fit for life.

CrossFit workouts can be adapted for anyone and everyone. Your CrossFit accredited coach will be able to scale and customise each workout to suit your ability and experience. No matter what your age, ability or fitness level, this unique fitness program is one of the most effective ways to meet your goals.

What is the purpose of a WOD?

The WOD is a firm favourite of many gymgoers and CrossFitters across the world – combining effective high-intensity training with an ever-changing variety of CrossFit inspired strength and conditioning exercises. Its multi-faceted approach allows participants to improve every element of their physical fitness – building the power of a weightlifter, the strength and flexibility of a gymnast, and the stamina of a sprinter.

The WOD aims to build on CrossFit’s aim of getting and keeping its participants fit for life – simultaneously challenging a wide range of muscle groups.

Is CrossFit aerobic or anaerobic?

CrossFit’s multifaceted approach to fitness draws from a number of sports, disciplines, and techniques – meaning that its workouts often balance both anaerobic and aerobic exercise. This balance is often adjusted in accordance with individual or group goals.

Whatever your experience level, preferences, or goals, Orwell Fitness’ certified CrossFit coaches will work to ensure your class experience is fully scalable to meet your needs, the ad features enough variation to encourage progress.

How does EMOM work?

EMOM is a commonly used acronym in CrossFit classes across the globe. It stands for ‘every minute on the minute’, and refers to a form of interval training, often seen in WODs. This type of training challenges participants to complete a ‘pre-established number of reps of an exercise within 60 seconds’. Any remaining time within the minute is used to rest before the next EMOM exercise is announced.

This high-intensity interval format is a brilliant way to push the body to its limits, putting you in competition with yourself and others to complete the workout to the best of your ability.

Do I need to be fit to do CrossFit?

You don’t have to be fit to do CrossFit; in fact, the discipline prides itself on being open to any fitness level, age, or ability. Whether you’re an experienced athlete, complete beginner, or somewhere in between, your CrossFit accredited coaches will work to ensure you become familiar with their exercises, techniques, facilities, classes, and community in no time.

CrossFit programs, classes, and training options are typically hand-designed by expert instructors to be completely scalable – meaning that there’s an option for everyone. For example, if you’re unable to do a pushup, you may scale back to a wall or knee pushup.

At Orwell Fitness, we offer a no-obligation free trial for new starts, during which we’ll work with you to gauge your fitness levels and goals before making accordant training suggestions.

We’ll do everything we can to help you succeed, and cheer you on every step of the way. All we ask from you is effort and commitment.

Is just doing the CrossFit WOD enough?

Whether or not the WOD is ‘enough’ for your exercise routine depends completely on your individual fitness level, preferences, and schedule. Completing the Orwell Fitness daily WOD will quickly improve overall fitness and strength.

For those who’d like to take their workout one step further, our coaches recommend focusing on goals or weaknesses in one of our specialist classes or teaming up with one of our expert personal trainers. Those more experienced in CrossFit and able to work independently may want to take advantage of open gym sessions to work on their own terms.

How will CrossFit change my body?

Crossfit aims to get you fit and keep you fit forever. During your workout, your CrossFit coach will aim to ensure you work to your full potential, getting your heart rate and lactate levels high, whilst challenging multiple muscle groups simultaneously. These tough, multidisciplinary workouts, when completed regularly and correctly, are proven to deliver significant strength gains, build power, and improve flexibility and range of motion, amongst a wide range of benefits.

After committing to CrossFit by, for example, attending the WOD 3-5 times per week, you’ll notice significant changes in your performance abilities, body composition, and in your daily life.

Find out how our classes changed the bodies and lives of some of our valued members by listening to their stories on our case studies page.

Is CrossFit suitable for beginners?

Though CrossFit’s intense nature can be intimidating for beginners, its philosophy is very much based on being accessible to any age, ability, or fitness level. Whether you’re an experienced athlete, a complete beginner, or somewhere in between, your chosen CrossFit coach will work to familiarise you with common exercises, class formats, and equipment, ensuring you’re confident and comfortable from the very beginning.

How should a beginner start CrossFit?
